Frequently asked questions

How long must CO2 be stored?

The concept of CCUS is to store CO2 at least until fossil fuels are no longer used (1 to 2 centuries). Nevertheless, the atmospheric concentration in CO2 must also have stabilized and decreased. Given the complexity of carbon cycle (which takes several centuries), stabilizing carbon concentration in the atmosphere requires the CO2 to be kept underground for a minimum of 1 000 years (source: IPCC).
